St Michael has nearly tripled in population over the last two decades to more than 22,000 people, and sits right on I-94 about 30 minutes from downtown Minneapolis — a genuine commuter hub that’s kept its small-town feel. Growth here has been broad and steady rather than one big wave: new single-family neighborhoods, townhome developments, and infill construction have filled in around an established downtown core, with the city working to keep parks and infrastructure on pace with the rooftops.
Schools
St Michael shares the St. Michael-Albertville (STMA) School District with Albertville — one of the fastest-growing districts in Minnesota, running from several K-8 elementary schools through a comparatively new high school that opened for the 2009-10 school year.
Parks & Recreation
The city recently put nearly $3 million into Town Center Park near City Hall — a splash pad, a shaded playground, a large pavilion, and six pickleball courts. Riverside County Park, Pelican Lake, and Beebe Lake Regional Park are all close by for fishing, kayaking, and waterfowl hunting.
Getting Around
Sitting directly on I-94 keeps St Michael roughly 30 minutes from downtown Minneapolis and about 40 minutes from St. Cloud, making it a practical base whichever direction you’re headed.
